Couples therapy can be dynamic, challenging and, when both individuals are engaged, can produce results that resolve issues and help couples learn to develop a conscious connection. During couples therapy, we work both individually and with both partners to identify, understand and address the underlying problems and their negative impact on the relationship.
Couples will also learn specific skills for re-romanticizing the relationship while maintaining a conscious vision for the ongoing growth during the present and into the future. Conflicts arising from sexual intimacy, financial issues and child rearing, or even more severe struggles, such as domestic violence infidelity, overeating, drug and alcohol addiction, reflect an inability to understand and cope with underlying emotional issues. By unraveling the layers of feelings that prompt the activation of these conflicts, we can get to the root causes of both individual and couple problems, as well as the triggers that cause destructive behavior.
The goal of couples therapy is to restore healthy contact and connection while enhancing self-awareness, personal growth and to realize individual potential. For most people who still feel connected to their partners, this outcome can result in a process for achieving greater intimacy and respect for each other.
Sometimes, however, relationships can also be identified as being toxic, and couples therapy can help both individuals understand and take ownership of their obstacles and to be accountable for unmet needs projected on their partner. Matt helps couples better understand their connections and degree of commitment, while helping them to choose the best path as a couple and a unified way of growing together.
